Most people don't know this, but Caminos de Agua wouldn't exist without Jeff Rottler. He's a co-founder of CATIS-Mexico, our predecessor organization. Jeff helped the organization get off the ground and led many of our early workshops and programs. Jeff spearheaded the development of our ceramic water filter program and ran the operations and production for years, and he even made the initial connections to some of our most important grassroots and community collaborators. Caminos is in your debt, Jeff!
Jeff has always been someone who knows how to make the right connections, build lasting and deep relationships, and ultimately get the job done. While he's not directly involved in the operations of Caminos de Agua today, I still look to Jeff any time I have an obscure need, am looking for a niche provider, or have difficult or "unsolvable" problem because Jeff is just "the guy" who get things done, and, thankfully, he still always responds.
From a building standpoint, not only is Jeff an master builder with an incredibly talented and trustworthy team (which is no small feat and speaks to the respect we all have for Jeff), but he also knows the regional water situation better than most and is the first person I would recommend to install any sort of water system (i.e. rainwater harvesting, drinking water, filtration, etc.). He also always has an open line to me and Caminos de Agua for any support!
I've had the distinct pleasure to work with, and learn from, Jeff not only on water projects, but on building projects in Chiapas, Mexico, educational workshops, and even the construction of brick kilns and the production of "green" bricks.

“Ingenieros Sin Fronteras México, A.C. (ISF-Mexico) is a non-profit civil association founded in September 2004 by a group of professors from the Faculty of Engineering of the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (FI-UAT). The main objectives of ISF-Mexico are to promote and develop basic services engineering projects (potable water, sanitation, solid waste management, sustainable housing, etc.) in poor communities in urban and rural areas. Other areas in which ISF-Mexico has been working in recent years are the integrated management of water resources at the watershed level, the modeling of climate change and droughts, and the impact that these two phenomena have on water availability (surface and groundwater) at the watershed level.
Other objectives of ISF-Mexico are related to the academic and professional training of new generations of engineers with a broader environmental and social vision. In all the projects that ISF-Mexico has participated in, we always seek to incorporate the largest number of engineering students in the development of these projects, in order to contribute to the academic, professional and social training of these new generations of engineers.
In May 2010, the first contacts were made between ISF-Mexico and Instituto Tierra y Cal, A.C., where Jeff Rottler collaborated at the time. A collaborative alliance was established between these two NGOs to develop a training center for housing and sustainable rural development, located on the outskirts of San Miguel Allende, Guanajuato. Thus was born the Center for Appropriate Technology and Local Sustainability-Mexico (CATIS). CATIS-Mexico was the joint project where close collaboration was established between ISF-Mexico and Jeff Rottler, as well as other members of the CATIS-Mexico board of directors.
ISF-Mexico and Jeff Rottler collaborated in several courses-workshops on sustainable housing and the development of rainwater harvesting systems for potable water supply at the household level. Collaborations were also carried out on the topics of hydrology and design of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment at the residential level.
In all these years of collaboration between ISF-Mexico and Jeff Rottler, a close bond of professional collaboration was established, which later led to a close friendship between Jeff Rottler and members of the ISF-Mexico board of directors.
The Covid-19 pandemic forced a break in the professional collaboration between ISF-Mexico and Jeff Rottler, but that will change with new projects that we are confident will appear in the near future to reestablish the ties of professional collaboration and friendship with Jeff Rottler.”

“I was very fortunate to attend a 3 day workshop hosted by Jeff Rottler and his crew, with a focus on construction techniques using Compressed Earth Blocks.
During the 3 days, we learned both the history of Compressed Earth Blocks as well as their practical application in construction.
The classes included, but were certainly not limited to, learning about soil selection, processing and testing soil, various production techniques with both a manual press and a motorized press, as well as the actual production of the blocks.
The entire workshop was very hands-on. We were able to participate in the construction of a small building on site with blocks that were recently made. In addition, we were given a demonstration of lime and clay plastering using natural Nopal cactus. We were encouraged to try our hand at plastering a vertical wall, which led many of us to realize what an art it truly is!
The workshop was led in both Spanish and English and the hosts made the foreigners feel right at home with the local attendees. In addition, the workshop included lunch each day made by a local family that was simply delicious.
As a final surprise, we had the opportunity to work for a short while with a local master, building a boveda ceiling with locally fired red bricks.
As someone who has a fair bit of construction experience in the United States, I was delighted to expand my horizon to this construction technique that is little known in most of the US with such a knowledgeable teacher as Jeff.
All of the instructors were kind and extremely knowledgeable. They had the capacity to speak to participants who had extensive experience in construction as well as those just starting out with the same level of expertise and respect.
